About Ming
Ming Chew'’s background as a veteran physical therapist and avid jujitsu practitioner is a unique combination that has enabled him to move beyond the norm of standard therapeutics and into the more holistic aspects of patient care. Like many healers, his interest was self-motivated. He explains, "Growing up in Brooklyn as the only Chinese-American kid in my neighborhood was tough; I was constantly getting picked on. It was nothing short of a miracle at age 14 that I came across Arnold Schwarzenegger’'s book, Pumping Iron. It changed my life. I thought, "Wow,
if I looked like that, I'd never get picked on again!" Legendary martial arts master Bruce Lee was another role model Ming admired as teen. "“I viewed him as a strong Chinese American who fought people with his fists. What better way to protect myself than to build muscle so people would fear me and I wouldn't have to fight them. By the time I was 16, my training added 40 lbs. of muscle and the tormenting stopped. In fact, my new friends were the same guys who used to attack me - —full of questions about training. The irony of it all was that I never had to fight anyone.” "
In 1997, Ming earned a blue belt under Brazilian jujitsu and mixed martial arts champion Renzo Gracie. Unfortunately, Ming incurred a shoulder injury standard therapy could not help. The pain was debilitating and created limited range of motion in the joint. With the understanding of traditional approaches to this type of injury, Ming set out to research alternative methods of therapy that did not involve surgery. Surprisingly,
he found significant relief using treatments based on each of the body's biomechanical and connective tissue systems, and created a highly successful, non-invasive therapy that often only takes 5-6 treatments to resolve injury.
Augmenting this treatment was a series of special stretches originated by Dr. Guy Voyer, DO, but modified by Ming. To further complement Ming's manual system, Ming also implemented a very specific program of hydration, diet and supplementation, along these spinal and fascial stretches, as a home stretching program for his patients. An anecdotal story from his early days using this protocol is about a patient named David, whose severe back pain virtually disappeared after following Ming’'s stretching and other techniques during a business trip.
(For David's complete story, see this excerpt from The Permanent Pain Cure.)
Ming adds, “"I was amazed these stretches could work on their own without hands-on treatment as long as you drink enough water, eat the right diet and take the right supplements along with them. And you don't need a gym or equipment— - they're with you wherever you go. So I decided
to offer this to everyone."” That offering became what is known as The Ming Method, a widely respected therapy that has helped thousands.
